We got off the cruise ship at St. Goar. We actually wanted to get off at St. Goarshausen, but we kinda missed it while sipping our drinks. Oops! That's OK. We just took the ferry across the river from St. Goar to St. Goarshausen. Carolyn taking a bit of video of the Rheinfels ruins. Burg Katz from the ferry. Getting ready to dock. Burg Katz, high above St. Goarshausen. It's still in private hands. An aerial view of Burg Katz. And there it is, the intended destination: The Loreley. That's a flag of Germany up on top. But first, a little stroll through St. Goarshausen. Burg Katz is almost always hovering above. This little alley leads to the historic Old Town section of St. Goarshausen. Kids on their way home from school. Carolyn saying Hi in front of a large mural. The requisite quaint houses. From the mural, a view of the city in 1850 together with a short history. The town was given as a dowry in 1276 to the Duke of Katzenelnbogen. The castle was built in 1371. In 1806 the French destroyed the castle and it was rebuilt in 1896. A bunch of other things also happened. Guests are heartily welcomed. The castle oversees everything. This shows the years the Rhine has flooded its banks. In 1988 I was living in Germany when it flooded. Looks like that was the third worst flood here. I love these beautiful, narrow streets with lots of flowers and cafes. Another view of the castle. More of St. Goarshausen's old town alleys. Next stop is the climb up to the top of the Loreley cliff. And a view from the top. That's St. Goarshausen down there in the distance. OK, we didn't walk the entire way up. We took a bus most of the way and then walked the last half mile or so. The Loreley Cliffs. 193.14 meters above sea level. 125.00 meters above the Rhine. Carolyn posing on top of the Loreley. The two of us together.
