Next stop was Stuttgart for our second soccer game. Inside the train station in Stuttgart. This is not the typical German train station architecture. This seems to have more of an American Southwest feel to it. Our hotel was actually attached to the train station. Oh boy, that was a huge mistake! Hot, noisy, miserable. I'm sure there are plenty of nice things about Stuttgart, but they were so completly hidden by all the World Cup festivities, that the city was not really very attractive. In the background you can see the Castle Square, and behind that, Neues Schloss, or New Palace. Across the Castle Square (Schlossplatz) is the roof of the Altes Schloss, the Old Palace. A sea of World Cup Soccer fans. Hmmm, I wonder what Spain was playing Tunesia the next day. The Tunesian fans were out dancing in the streets on this hot, muggy evening. The past several photos were taken from on the steps betwen the columns of the Königsbau (Kings Building), which is the seat of the Stuttgart stock exchange. This is the entrance to the Old Palace. Old Palace
This is the courtyard with the arcade. This is a memorial to Earl Eberhard the Bearded. (Seriously!) Some Spanish fans saw an opportunity... ...for a photograph. This is also a nice shot of the courtyard. Hey, if the Spaniards can take a picture, so can I! Another angle of the courtyard. World Cup was not the time to come to Stuttgart to sightsee. What a mess. This is the Stiftskirche, or Collegiate Church. A church was originally built on this spot in 1175. We heard an organ concert in this church. Throngs of people and lots of beer tents. Working our way around the Collegiate Church. The side of the Collegiate Church. I love that winding staircase up the side of the tower. I was pretty desperate for some touristy pictures of Stuttgart. People everywhere on the morning of the game.
