The Mainzer Hof Hotel. Not the prettiest hotel we stayed in, but it was nice nonetheless. Church of Christ as seen from the front of the Hotel Mainzer Hof. We arrived not only during World Cup but also during the Johannes Fest in Mainz. Along the Rhine and throughout the city, a festival celebrating Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. Carolyn and Sandra look over the ubiquitous jewelry at the art-fair-like festival. Scarves galore! I like to call this one Carolyn's Rainbow. Yes, scarves galore. It was quite warm out and quite crowded too. The Rhine looking north towards the Lorelei Valley. The main bridge over the Rhine between Mainz and Frankfurt. More of the beautiful architecture. Again, Carolyn really likes the architecture. Our first glimpse of the famous Mainz Cathedral. Carolyn talks to one of the natives whose language she's very familiar with. The Mainz Cathedral up close. (This is actually two photos I stitched together.) Is that really Johannes Gutenberg in the flesh? Inside the Mainz Cathedral. Is that a green ghost there in the middle right above the altar? Carolyn at the prayer candles. The main nave (sactuary) of the cathedral looking towards the high altar. The beautiful artwork in the sanctuary. And the ceiling. More of the nave with wonderfully carved sculptures. The pulpit of the cathedral. The East Choir, at the opposite end of the cathedral to the altar.
